Das Anwesen is located on the historic Karbach Ranch.
When the ranch began, only the father and sons remained in the country with the mother and daughters riding from town on the weekends. First, a post and smaller rock kitchen with a stone fireplace was built for cooking and sleeping. Then a double log barn with a dogtrot was constructed for the men. One side was used for sleeping quarters while the dogtrot and additional log room was held for livestock and feed. By 1852 the entire family had moved from town to the ranch. On the hill over-looking the log barn, a one room home was constructed, and over the course of years it grew into a large home accommodating the entire twelve member family. Of special interest was the bell which hung just outside the rear kitchen door. It was rung when the men were called to eat or when there was an emergency.
To safe-guard the children against the Indians, a trap door was cut into the floor and covered with a rug. In the late 1850's, visits from the local Indian tribes were prevalent. When itinerant Indians arrived, the smaller children were ushered into their secret hiding place while the mother and eldest carried soup or stew and bread to the front gate to feed the their visitors. If trouble ensued, the bell was rung and the men came from the fields.
By the second generation, the Karbach family had established themselves as leaders within the community. They founded the first Methodist church in New Braunfels in 1858. When the congregation grew, the new and larger Karbach Memorial Methodist Church was built in the downtown area. Life on the ranch continued as the land mass grew. Of special importance was the fact that the second generation of ten children all attained college educations, including the girls. Within this close family unit, there were doctors, nurses, teachers and leading merchants.
So many of the descendents lived on the ranch that it became know as the Karbach Encampment. Today, the original land and surrounding areas are still held by the Karbach family where they live and continue to thrive.
